After a 2 week-long break, yesterday I returned to the TAPMI (The Academic PAIN Medicine Institute) PAIN U Program, held at Women’s College.
Every week starts with is a different group topic, while we rotate between Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and gym sessions. Yesterday we discussed sleep and pain, while I started my 4-week Exercise segment. 😊
So to my great surprise… when I walked into the gym, there waiting for me was an old friend… Mrs. Elliptical.
Though her cousin lives in my den… I have not been able to visit my longtime friend because of the pain it leaves and the energy it takes.
BUT THAT’S ABOUT CHANGED💡
One of my biggest #challenges during this new life chapter is recognizing that I have “raised the bar” VERY HIGH in many aspects of my life (most are well-deserved accomplishments). So, in turn, now that my #currentsituation does not allow me to reach or sustain those bars, I am having #mental #emotional #physical #physchology difficulties
BUT THEN … because of GOD and his love for me, HE has graciously and unbeknownst to me, lowered some of those bars back down because sometimes I can’t reach them… I can barely stand, sit or crawl metaphorically.
This elliptical situation is a perfect example
PRE-ACCIDENT: 30-60 mins
POST-ACCIDENT: 5-10 mins, with 1-2 day Flare Up
YESTERDAY: 2 mins, no flare-ups & the feeling of #VICTORY!
So here are my takeaways…
1) It’s ok to readjust the “expectation bars” especially if we’ve fallen, can’t get up and those bars are life-sustaining to you move. Set then back at low or accept that God has… so you can lean on those bars, utilize them to help you get back to a standing posittion ONLY to possess the ability to raise them again!
P.S. – remind yourself that 2.0 versions are always better
2) There are FREE #fibromyalgia, #chronicpain and #arthritis #education #workshops #programs and #resources available.
FIGHT FOR YOUR LIFE: connect with #familydoctor #rheumatologist #communitycenter #library #supportgroups etc… see what is out there to help you…

3) CHANGE YOUR PERSPECTIVE… if a health or athletic person has to easy back into their exercise regiment after taking a week-long vacation. Why does it not make sense for chronic pain suffers to apply this same concept to their lives?
YESTERDAY’S VICTORY of 2 mins and 36 seconds on that elliptical was greater than the last 2 years and 16 days of not being able to get on at all.
CHALLENGE YOURSELF #2minstretch #5minwalk #3songdishcleaning #2treadmill #2minellipttical … the list goes on.
